Stanley Kubrick's films were landmark events – majestic, memorable and richly researched. But, as the years went by, the time between films grew longer and longer, and less and less was seen of the director. What on earth was he doing?

Two years after Kubrick's death, Jon Ronson was invited to the director's estate to explore the hundreds of boxes the legendary film director had collected during his decades at Childwick Manor in Hertfordshire. He's been returning ever since, and the story of Kubrick and the archive, now housed at University of the Arts London, is revealed in this fascinating documentary.

Inzwischen hat der zweite Batman-Film von Christopher Nolan den "Godfather" von Platz 1 der IMDB-Liste der am besten bewerteten Filme verdrängt. "The Dark Knight" bekommt vom Publikum im Durchschnitt 9.5 Punkte von 10. Damit muss man nicht übereinstimmen, aber man darf sich auf einen Blockbuster freuen, der auch die höchsten Erwartungen übertrifft. Man könnte sagen, dass man endlich verstanden hat, wie die Ikone Batman für die breite Masse am Besten funktioniert. Nolan hatte die Fledermaus im ersten Teil auf einen metaphysischen Kreuzgang geschickt und den Stoff von den Albernheiten der anderen Batman-Filme befreit. Mit dem zweiten Teil ist das Universum nun etabliert und das Drehbuch raffinierter als man es von dieserlei Filmen gewohnt ist.

"The Dark Knight" gibt von Anfang an Vollgas, verfängt sich aber niemals in überflüssiger Effekthascherei. Auch der Pseudo-Realismus der Bat-Gadgets funktioniert. Das Cape? Nun, endlich gibt es eine Erklärung dafür, es handelt sich um eine Art Gleitschirm für Spezialeinheiten. Regisseur und KFZ-Mechaniker Nolan hatte auch bereits für den ersten Teil eigenhändig ein neues Batmobil gebaut, einen panzerartiger Flitzer, der eher bedrohlich als cool wirkt. Nun kommt noch ein futuristisches Motorrad dazu, aber man gibt sich sparsam mit den Bat-Gimmicks der Vergangenheit. Kein "Hey, Robin, reich mir mal das Anti-Hai-Batspray!" Zwar gibt es in einer Szene mit Morgan Freeman als Batmans Q eine schöne Hommage an den Gimmick-Wahnsinn der Bond-Filme, aber der eigentliche Star des Filmes ist natürlich der Joker, Batmans wüst geschminkter Erzfeind, der von Heath Ledger auf eine Art und Weise gespielt wird, dass man immer wieder vergisst, das Popcorn in sich reinzustopfen.

Der erste Auftritt von Heath Ledger als psychopathischer Serienmörder erfolgt schon nach wenigen Minuten und lässt keinen Zweifel daran, dass seine Version des Jokers nur selten Spaß versteht. Seine Leinwandpräsenz ist atemberaubend und macht klar, was für einen großartigen Schauspieler man da verloren hat. Ledgers Performance allein lohnt den Besuch eines Lichtspieltheaters, aber man sollte nicht vergessen, dass man es mit u.a. Gary Oldman, Michael Caine und Morgan Freeman auch sonst nicht gerade mit einem schlecht besetzten Film zu tun hat.

Aber es sind die Dialoge von Batman und Joker, größtenteils "Anleihen" aus Alan Moore's Geniestreich "Killing Joke", die dem Film seine Klasse verleihen. Sie sind sich sehr ähnlich mit der jeweiligen Selbstjustiz, der düstere Rächer und der Killerclown. Sie brauchen sich und wahrscheinlich werden sie sich noch ewig weiter bekämpfen, wie der Joker am Ende vermutet. So wird es wohl sein. Nur wird sich beim nächsten Wiedersehen leider jemand anders die Schminke des Jokers auftragen müssen und dies ist wohl der einzige Wermutstropfen.

In anderen Worten: eine 8.6, würde ich sagen.

Making fun of Hitler and Tom Cruise is always a good thing!

Dokumentarfilm über das Apollo-Programm, der mit allerhand Lob bedacht wurde. Alte Männer erzählen von früher, Geigen zirpen, Raketen fliegen hoch, Schafe schauen auf. Hat man alles öfters schon aus dem Hause "History Channel" gesehen und wirklich ohne neue Bilder oder Meinungen.

Zu empfehlen ist dagegen From The Earth To The Moon (5 DVDs), die erste Produktion der Tom Hanks-Firma Playtone und die erste große Eigenproduktion aus dem Hause HBO. Schöner Auftritt von Hanks als Georges Méliès in der ersten Folge und die Serie schließt nahtlos an den oftmals unterschätzten Film The Right Stuff an.

Auf fiktionale Weise lässt sich aus dem Thema mehr rausholen, SFX macht ausnahmsweise richtig Sinn und die DVD-Box hält noch massig Dokumaterial oben drauf bereit.

Hübsche Romantic Comedy mit Sir Ben Kingley als Killer mit Alkoholproblemen. Menschen ab 50 bedenkenlos zu empfehlen. Gesehen und gleich wieder vergessen.

Richard Kelley wird wohl so schnell nicht aus der "Typ, der 'Donnie Darko' gedreht hat"-Ecke rauskommen. Seine hübsch anzusehende Echtzeit-Apocalypse würde sich auf der großen Leinwand sicher gut machen, aber mehr als ein "direkt auf DVD mit Bonus-Movie" ist hier wohl nicht zu holen gewesen, aber gleichzeitig Regisseur und Autor sein ist nicht immer einfach. Dabei hatte sich Kelley viel vorgenommen. Er lässt 2006 in Texas eine Atombombe hochgehen, zieht gegen Schurkenstaaten in den Krieg, weist George W. Bush seine Rolle in der Geschichte zu, hat seinen 2008 spielenden Film schön ausgestattet und prima Designer an der Hand gehabt, der "The Rock" zeigt seinen nackten Oberkörper aber leider kippt die krude Geschichte um Neo-Marxisten und einen Schauspieler mit Amnesie ziemlich schnell in die Belanglosigkeit ab. Spätestens nach 60 von 145 Minuten wünscht man sich zumindest eine Aufhebung des Rauchverbots im Kino, wenn man denn im Kino sitzt. Daheim kann man vorspulen und das ist auch gut so.

Kelley begeht einen kapitalen Fehler: er benutzt den gleichen Trick ein zweites mal und verärgert damit nicht nur seine Fans. Nach dem clever angelegten Zeitreise-Drama "Donnie Darko" kann man dieses "Oh, es gibt da einen Riss im Raum-Zeit-Kontinuum" nur noch schwer akzeptieren. Zeitreise taugt für Komödien oder als ein Überraschungselement unter vielen wie im Falle der TV-Serie "Lost", aber meist bleibt es beim Mittel zum Zweck.

"Southland Tales" hat Figuren, die niemanden interessieren, langweilige Wendungen, die man irgendwann nicht mehr mitbekommt und ein albernes Ende, das kaum noch interessiert. Man ist einfach nur froh, wenn der Quatsch vorbei ist. Jede Folge "X-Files" hat da mehr Pfiff. Wirklich schade.

• I forgot I had a freebie-dvd-copy of this. Must have been in some magazine, probably ended up on some pile to sort out later, moved out around my place a few times and decades later.. I watched it last night and it's really great. It has the best skeleton scene ever! The house you see in the opening is the Ennis House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. They also shot a scene for "Blade Runner" there. I watched "Last man on Earth" again afterwards because it was on the same dvd, but the copy was lousy and the disc sort of scratched in the middle and Hulk got mad, but thanks to the lord there is a new version which just came out and I might wanna buy it. It's free on the internet ( The Last Man on Earth, Public Domain), I know, but that means you haven't seen the film. Watch the opening again and you want to see it with a better resolution. Yeah, or you go and watch it on your Ipod while drinking Baby Machiatto on the taxi, trying to get the Concorde to New York in time....

They're still working on a remake for 2009.

While everyone's (Yes, everyone!) waiting for the premiere of Marvel's "The Incredible Hulk" (How can you not like The Hulk...?), the studio released an exclusive trailer for Marvel's "Punisher: War Zone". Everyone's (Everyone's!) favourite psychopath returns and after Dolph Lundgren failing in 1991 and that horrible movie with John Travolta from 2004, it's about time for some true old school action Marvel Style and a serious movie starring the man with the skull on his chest.

Writer Garth Ennis ("Preacher") has done some interesting things with the character the last couple of years and the folks at Marvel Studios are wise to try something without green monsters and people wearing spandex for a change if they really wanna become the no.1 player in the industry within five years. They got the toys, the heroes and everybody wants to work for them. It looks good for "Marvel".

They're also busy working on Wolverine (follow the link for a Flickr-Set: the set of "Wolvie fights Nazis on D-Day"), "Thor" and "Captain America" will follow soon and "Avengers" (all these guys in one big ensemble-movie) could become the biggest blockbuster of the decade.

This movie has been in the air forever and now it's finally coming out in late 2009. Cinematical talked to actor Tom Noonan in Cannes.

The clip doesn’t look or feel anything like the movie, the Wild Thing suit is a very early cringy prototype, and the boy is a friend of ours Griffin who we had used in a Yeah Yeah Yeahs video we shot a few weeks before. Ach, Tom Cruise als Edelnazi, altes Thema, neues Thema. Nach den Testvorführungen in Ohio hat das unbedarfte Publikum geheult und gesagt, ey, der Held soll am Ende nicht erschossen werden, das ist total depressive, kann man da nicht was machen? Hat man nachgedacht, den Filmstart verschoben und oben läuft jetze der brandneue Trailer, der einfach nur noch gnadenlos lächerlich ist. Der Mann, der ihnen "X-Men" und "Superman Returns" brachte, präsentiert.... Der soll ma' bitte schön an der Kinokasse ersaufen, der Film!
