SUNDAY PICNIC DOWN BY THE RIVER

Photobucket (Chongqing IV )

Don't Panic: "The Yangtze is the longest river in the world to run through one single country. More people live along its banks than in the United States. Understandably it forms a key part of Chinese cultural identity. Nadav Kander travelled its length to take these photographs, which form a diary of development."

MACHINES FROM A PAST THAT NEVER WAS

Photobucket we make money not art: "Robert Kusmirowski does copies, simulacra, forgeries, mock-ups. Meticulously and masterfully. The result of his craft is an illusion. You believe you're in front of a relic from the past, complete with patina: a sepia photography, old newspapers, cigarette packs, but also a graveyard, the wagon of a '40s train or an entire train station. (...) The Polish artist currently has two works in Turin, one is UHER.C at Guida Costa Projects. The second one, DATAmatic 880, is on show at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo as part of the Turin Triennale."

EGYPTIAN BLOGGER WINS HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD

Menassat: "Egyptian blogger Nora Younis has been awarded a prize by the US-based rights group Human Rights First (HRF) for her activism on human rights issues in her country. (...) Through her videos, photos, and writings, Younis has for some years exposed rights violations in Egypt, including the raid of a Sudanese refugee sit-in in Cairo by Egyptian police in 2005 and the sexual assaults on women in a Cairo demonstration the same year by plainclothes security officers.

Her work has been used by various rights groups and media outlets around the world in exposing issues such as sexual harassment and the struggle of the Bahai community in Egypt-topics that previously went largely unnoticed in the mass media or even by Egypt's legal system."

// A R T E F A C T

Very interesting new site from Croatia: / a r t e f a c t: "While some speak of power strategies, it appears to us to be much more justified to join those who not only talk about but also create strategies of resistance. And it is for this purpose that we have started up the on-line magazine ART-e-FACT, intending, in the digital age - in which power lies neither in institutions nor on the streets but on the Web, that is, in the communications system - to seek and to encourage possible answers, exchanging ideas about the burning questions of both culture and art, and of society at large.

ART-e-FACT, then, not at all accidentally, is not just a magazine for contemporary art and culture. It is above all an open and public forum for the critical consideration of society, of new practices in art, their interaction with the theory and politics of presentation in an artistic and indeed a non-artistic context."

ONLINE THEATRE : ALL THE WEB'S A STAGE

Very interesting story in The Independent: "Theatre company Punchdrunk is renowned for pushing board-treading boundaries. Since its foundation in 2000, it has won praise from critics and audiences for shows in which participants are free to choose what they watch and where they go. (...)

Punchdrunk has teamed up with games company Hide & Seek, Hewlett-Packard research arm HP Labs and online design firm Seeper to create a 'hybrid experience' between real and computer-generated worlds. And at first glance it seems very different to the average console adventure. (...) Last Will begins with two players walking into disconcerting darkness. Both are led through a series of "tunnels" hemmed in by drapes that hang either side of a dim, central corridor. The players then split up. My gaming partner for the evening, Ben, enters a "physical" realm – several interconnected rooms in the warehouse which have been made up to look like an elaborate theatre set. Meanwhile I enter a "virtual realm", which is a dark room in which sits – less glamorously – a computer workstation and headphones. Without wishing to give away details of the plot to would-be players, it's the story of an old man in trouble – whom both players have to help.

To do this, I must navigate through a computer-generated version of the physical space in which Ben is located. I'm charged with solving a number of puzzles, which involves clicking on various objects within a computer-generated room in sequence. I later discover that my actions within the virtual world are having effects in the physical world – such as unlocking doors. "

SPRENGSTOFF - WOHNUNG VON BURKHARD SCHRÖDER DURCHSUCHT

Telepolis. "Herstellung von Explosivstoffen": Wohnungsdurchsuchung bei Telepolis-Autor Burkhard Schröder. Computer beschlagnahmt

HIROSHIMA - THE LOST PHOTOGRAPHS

Photobucket

Very interesting story in the Design Observer: "One rainy night eight years ago, in Watertown, Massachusetts, a man was taking his dog for a walk. On the curb, in front of a neighbor’s house, he spotted a pile of trash: old mattresses, cardboard boxes, a few broken lamps. Amidst the garbage he caught sight of a battered suitcase. He bent down, turned the case on its side and popped the clasps.

He was surprised to discover that the suitcase was full of black-and-white photographs. He was even more astonished by their subject matter: devastated buildings, twisted girders, broken bridges — snapshots from an annihilated city. He quickly closed the case and made his way back home.

At the kitchen table, he looked through the photographs again and confirmed what he had suspected. He was looking at something he had never seen before: the effects of the first use of the Atomic bomb. The man was looking at Hiroshima.

In a dispassionate and scientific style, the seven hundred and one photographs inside the suitcase catalogued a city seared by a new form of warfare. The origin and purpose of the photographs were a mystery to the man who found them that night. Now, over sixty years after the bombing of Hiroshima, their story can be told. "

SEXINA

Photobucket

10zenmonkeys.com: A James Bond-style theme song rolls behind the opening credits of a new film featuring Adam West as a ruthless criminal mastermind. But its star is Sexina, part Britney Spears, part private-investigator-secretly-fighting corruption-in-the-music-industry.

79-year-old West plays a ruthless music industry overlord bent on destroying the sexy pop sensation with an evil boy band composed entirely of cuddly robots. The ultimate irony? The movie's theme is sung by Davy Jones, whose vocals for The Monkees in the 1960s make him one of the original boy band singers. "
