Never mind the Old School Terrorists Revival - What happened to the minds of the RAF?

My pal Sarah who writes smart shit over at alternet.org and elsewhere sent me the following clipping from AP:

Terror films, fashion stir Germany

By Stephen Graham

Nov. 17, 2002 | BERLIN (AP) --

They kidnapped business leaders, gunned down police officers and hijacked an airliner. But even after Sept. 11, the failed German revolutionaries who spread fear in the 1970s and '80s have acquired a certain chic.

Left-wingers were always nostalgic for the ideals of the student movement from which the feared Red Army Faction terrorists sprang - strident opposition to the Vietnam War, rebellion against their parents' silence on World War II, a society still not completely purged of old Nazis.

Now a wave of films giving the terrorists a more human face, and a series of cheeky fashion items, suggest a broader recasting of history is under way. Some, including Germany's president, are worried by the Red Army Faction's pop culture revival, while others see in it a harmless expression of a bygone era.

"There's an in-crowd who thinks it's chic to make the RAF into Robin Hood figures," said Klaus Boelling, who was the government's spokesman when the violence reached its bloody peak 25 years ago this fall.

"But murder is murder, and Germans know that ideological terrorism is a real danger, today and in the future," he said.

On Oct. 18, 1977, Boelling told a relieved nation that German troops had freed 86 hostages on a Lufthansa plane hijacked to Mozambique to force the release of three jailed RAF leaders. The three, Andreas Baader, Ulrike Meinhof and Jan-Carl Raspe, committed suicide in prison after the attempt failed.

But it was also Boelling's job, the following day, to announce that the kidnapped head of the nation's Industry Federation, Hanns-Martin Schleyer, had been found shot dead in the trunk of a car.

The Red Army Faction went on to bomb U.S. military targets and assassinate a string of business and political figures. It only formally disbanded in 1998, although it had been inactive for some years.

Several cases remain unsolved and suspects are still on the run. Yet filmmakers and writers, many from the same generation, have already begun to re-examine the period, placing a focus on the perpetrators that rankles older Germans.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Volker Schloendorff paved the way in 1999 with "The Legends of Rita," about a young woman swept into the terrorist movement by idealism and love.

The trickle has become a flood, with at least half a dozen new films in cinemas and on television this year.

"Black Box Germany" featured a gripping interview with the widow of Alfred Herrhausen, the chairman of Deutsche Bank killed by a bomb in 1989 - and balanced it with a portrait of Wolfgang Grams, an RAF terrorism suspect who, according to an official investigation, shot himself to death in 1993 as police closed in.

Others include "The State I Am In," described by Der Spiegel magazine as an "RAF road movie," and "What To Do In Case of Fire," an attempt to make amateur bomb-making into sentimental comedy.

Most disputed is the movie "Baader," about the male half of the Baader-Meinhof name that evolved into the RAF. It drew stinging criticism at this year's Berlin film festival for glamorizing the era - but still walked off with a prize.

The movie, by little-known German director Christopher Roth, begins with a pounding punk-rock soundtrack and spends two hours painting a stylish picture of Andreas Baader as a moody maverick with a taste for fine clothes and fast cars.

It ends in his fictional death in a defiant solo showdown with dozens of armed police, strutting out of a garage where he had been cornered, pistols blazing. Baader was actually captured and imprisoned in 1972, five years before his suicide.

Some critics defend the Butch Cassidy-like embellishments as little different from any Hollywood director's efforts to freshen up a plot. But others say even that is done badly.

"It lacks a sense of timing, plot and tension," the left-leaning Tageszeitung daily said, judging that the film ultimately "capitulates before the RAF myth."

Addressing relatives of the terrorists' victims on the 25th anniversary of the Schleyer killing, President Johannes Rau expressed concern that young Germans know too little of what really happened.

"For many, the acronym RAF is foreign, a phenomenon, almost a phantom," he said.

While praising some documentaries for capturing the fear of the RAF years, Rau said others "seem to me to be strangely distanced and sober. They lack feeling and compassion."

Attention also has focused on the recycling of RAF symbols, such as its trademark machine gun and red star.

Stores have marketed underwear bearing the slogan "PRADA-MEINHOF" - a play on "Baader-Meinhof" making unauthorized use of the fashion company's name. A Berlin boutique offers T-shirts for infants with "Terrorist" in bright colors across the chest.

"The symbols of murder have surfaced in stylish ad campaigns, as if the terrorists were heroes of pop culture," Rau complained.

Still, others argue the terrorists could only be remodeled because the leftism of the period is no longer relevant.

Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer was once a street-fighting anarchist leader in Frankfurt - part of the mystique that has helped make him the country's most popular politician. Lawyer Otto Schily, now Germany's interior minister, once defended Baader in court.

Films such as Roth's, wrote the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, show just "how completely the memories have lost their political content, and into what deep sediment October 1977 has sunk." "So much time has passed that it has a different value today," said Christoph Heiss, an unemployed 40-year-old, after seeing "Baader" at a Berlin movie theater. "It's already a matter for history - even for pop history."

Now, Sarah wants to know if I wore the underwear. No! But I had Spider-Man-panties when I was eight and I agree with Jan Delay on the issue of the RAF. Check him out!
He is the first true Reggae-artist out of Germany and he's out on Buback, the traditional leftie-label from Hamburg. He did a song called "Söhne Stammheims". Stammheim is the name of the prison they built for the RAF and the title also mocks the name of a cheesy R&B-band from Germany.
It's pre-9/11 and the lyrics kind of go like this : "finally it's safe to drive your Mercedes again without being afraid that it might explode. Law, order and peace. And nobody cares about those fuckheads in prison anymore etc."
It's true. We don't care anymore. But we did for a while. We cared and we went to demonstrations for those prisoners and the cops kicked the shit out of us. Now people care about "Jürgen and Zlatko" as Jan Delay put it, referring to the most popular contanier-inhabitants of the Big Brother-era in Germany.
At the same time, the song was written, these two women from Berlin called themselves "Prada & Meinhoff" and they did funny interviews which they broadcasted on the web. They were the darlings of the new economy in Berlin and that's where the t-shirts came from.
It was a joke! Then there were a bunch of movies and "Blackbox BRD" is certainly a good one while "Baader" is complete crap. And the guy forgot "The Silence after the shooting" which was very good too. I don't know whether it's worse than "Pearl Harbour" since I don't wanna see either one.
But the scene or the underground in Germany has always been very political. That's where people come from. Look at the riots which have been going on the past week in Hamburg. That's not about some stupid punk-band or drinking prosecco at someone's artshow-opening. This "Radical Chick" has also been put up by "The Face", but losers like people making up trends for lifestyle-magazines need to come up with something new all the time.
People like that did Baader. These folks also like techno-disco-house and they're just urban attention-seekers trying to see their face in the local city-paper! Fuck them!

Then there is the case of the brains of Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin and Jan Carl Raspe missing. For ten years they were preserved in the brain-collection of the university in Tübingen. Now, Pathologist Jürgen Pfeiffer has no idea where they are or who took them. The brain of Ulrike Meinhoff has showed up at the university of Magdeburg and it will be given to her daughters in a while. Fucked up!

the story of a Saddam impersonator

guerrillanews has published a strange little story from the Asian Times.

"'Word got around the department that I was a good Arabic translator who did a great Saddam imitation,' recalls the Harvard grad student. 'Eventually, someone phoned me, asking if I wanted to help change the course of Iraq policy,'" writes Asia Times (Hong Kong) correspondent Ian Urbina. "So twice a week, for US$3,000 a month, the Iraqi student says, under condition of anonymity, that he took a taxi from his campus apartment to a Boston-area recording studio rented by the Rendon Group, a DC-based public relations firm with close ties to the U.S. government. His job: translate and dub spoofed Saddam Hussein speeches and tongue-in-cheek newscasts for broadcast throughout Iraq. 'I never got a straight answer on whether the Iraqi resistance, the CIA or policy makers on the Hill were actually the ones calling the shots,' says the student, 'but ultimately I realized that the guys doing spin were very well and completely cut loose.'"

Bin Laden having tea with the CIA

"IF CIA AND THE GOVERNMENT WEREN'T INVOLVED IN THE SEPTEMBER 11 ATTACKS WHAT WERE THEY DOING?
Nov. 2, 2001, 12:00 PST -- On Oct. 31 the French daily Le Figaro dropped a bombshell. While in a Dubai hospital receiving treatment for a chronic kidney infection last July, Osama bin Laden met with a top CIA official -- presumably the chief of station. The meeting, held in bin Laden's private suite, took place at the American hospital in Dubai at a time when he was a wanted fugitive for the bombings of two U.S. embassies and last year's attack on the USS Cole. Bin Laden was eligible for execution according to a 2000 intelligence finding issued by President Bill Clinton before leaving office in January. Yet on July 14, 2001 he was allowed to leave Dubai on a private jet, and there were no Navy fighters waiting to force him down.

In 1985 Oliver North -- the only member of the Reagan-Bush years who doesn't appear to have a hand in the current war -- sent the Navy and commandos after terrorists on the cruise ship Achille Lauro. In his 1991 autobiography "Under Fire," while describing terrorist Abu Abbas North wrote, "I used to wonder: how many dead Americans will it take before we do something?" One could look at the number of Americans Osama bin Laden is alleged to have killed before Sept. 11 and ask the same question.

It gets worse, much worse. A more complete timeline listing crucial events both before and after the Sept. 11 suicide attacks, which have been blamed on bin Laden, establishes CIA foreknowledge of them and strongly suggests that there was criminal complicity on the part of the U.S. government in their execution. It also makes clear that the events that have taken place since Sept. 11 are based upon an agenda that has little to do with the attacks."

Quote of the Week

"The United States has an impressive array of mass communications. There are 1,700 daily newspapers, 11,000 magazines, 9,000 radio and 1,000 television stations, 2,500 book publishers and 7 movie studios. If each of these were operated by a different owner, there would be 25,000 individual media voices in the country. Such a large number would almost guarantee a full spectrum of political and social ideas distributed to the population... But there are not 25,000 different owners.
Today fifty corporations own most of the output of daily newspapers and most of the sales and the audience in magazines, broadcasting, books, and movies. The fifty men and women who head these corporations would fit in a large room. They constitute a Private Ministry of Information and Culture."

Satanic Panic - Free the West Memphis Three!

The Robin Hood Hills Murders on May 5th, 1993 were a shock for everyone in and around Memphis, USA. Three 8 year old boys had been brutally murdered and thrown into a creek.
It didn't take the police too long to pin the crime on Damien Echols, a shy teenager who had been hassled by the cops whenever they were investigating a mayor crime. With the help of a mentally disabled teenager named Jessie Misskelley the cops made up a story about a satanic cult worshipping evil and sacrificing kids.
The only evidence they had were a bunch of books by Stephen King, lyrics by satan-worshippers like The Blue Oyster Cult and Pink Floyd and black tour-shirts by Metallica and other mainstream-bands. Indication proving the innocence of the trio were ignored. The legend of the West Memphis Three was born.
Jessie Misskelley and another kid called Jason Baldwin were sentenced to life in prison without parole while Damien Echols was sentenced to die by lethal injection.

The case of the WM3 is just one example of the new type of American witch hunt following the Columbine Murders. Nerdy kids with weird shirts who like reading books better than football or any other jock-activity are considered potential killers, satan worshippers of the worst kind or just plain unamerican.

Some of my dear readers may not realize how fundamentally religious the US are in reality. Americans go to church every sunday and they believe in the concept of god the old way. You know, there's a bearded guy in the sky and we're only his powerless children waiting for daddie's orders.
So, people like Marylin Manson are taken seriously while everyone else in the rest of the world thinks he's just a lame remake of Alice Cooper who is putting up quite a show. There have been all these trials were parents sued Judas Prist because their kid commited suicide listening to one of their records. Since most Americans believe in god, ghosts and aliens from outer space, it's no wonder they're really out to kill the followers of Satan and some trials remind normal human beings of the inquisition. Take all of that and add the current terrorist-paranoia to get an idea what being in high school must be like right now if you're not into god and following orders.
It's not easy having a good time if you're a 16 years old fan of Metal in the US. Wearing a certain shirt is considered open rebellion.Hell, some schools in the US even banned Bart Simpson-shirts a few years ago because they "undermined authority". Jon Katz has released a book which collects mails of so-called "teenage freaks" from a forum on slashdot.org after the Columbine Murders. Most of these mails come from dreamy nerds who like computing, playing Doom and listening to obnoxious noise. Bright kids with a general interest in having a life and getting out when they're old enough.
Kid, if you're reading this, get out as soon as you can! Move on! There are other places in the world, even in the US. Life might suck for you right now, but there are loads of people who know what you're going through right now. You are not alone.

Two filmmakers, Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, have already released two documentaries, "Paradise Lost" and "Revelations: Paradise Lost Revisited", on the case of the West Memphis Three. After Part One was broadcasted on TV, the WM3 suddenly found new supporters. Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam wore the "Free the WM3"-shirt on stage and so did the South park-creator Trey Parker in an interview. Eddie Spaghetti of the Supersuckers supports the campaign and even Prada-models pose with the official t-shirt in public.
Prada-Model
The latest supporter is good old Henry Rollins who has just released a compilaion called "Rise Above" which collects 24 songs of his classic band Black Flag. All tracks are interpreted by the Rollins Band aka. Mother Superior and the album features a long list of guest-simgers like Iggy Pop, Jello Biafra, Mike Patton, Tim Armstrong, Lars Frederiksen....
The CD supports the "Free the WM3"-campaign and Hank himself has announced that it's "Rollins vs. West Memphis, Arkansas" now.

Fuck, when my two former partners in crime did an interview with the man for "Gags & Gore" in 1991, he wanted to shove their tape-recorder up their asses! Nobody you want to have as an enemy!

MUTANTENWELT:

Programmier ma lieber was zum brennen. Hat irgendwer noch Feuer? Staunen, starren, Caipirinha.

MAX - Noah Taylor is "Young Hitler"

Lions Gate has released the first trailer for "Max", starring John Cusack, Noah Taylor, Leelee Sobieski and Molly Parker. The movie comes out in December.
Dutch director and writer Menno Meyjes who also wrote the scripts for "Indiana Jones III" and "The Colour Purple" had been talking to Steven Spielberg about the project, but the father of E.T. thought it was too controversial.
By now, the film has been attacked by everyone from the Jewish Defense League to the New York Times after it has been shown at the Toronto Film Festival.
Cusack plays the Jewish art-dealer Max Rothman from Munich who has to deal with a young and reckless student called Adolf Hitler. We see the dictator as a young man in 1918 and the movie tries to show us the "human" face of the "monster".
It looks like the early years of Hitler are ready to get manufactured by the mainstream. There are more movie like that in pre-production right now. It's about time to get rid of the historical roots and use the full potential of the historical figure for the entertainment-industry.

Hitler is still the arch-villain, but he has not been seen in as such in a mayor-production (except for comic-books like Captain America of course, but even Cap rather fights Hitler's henchman The Red Skull instead of Adolf himself. This reminds me that I wanted to write something on the potrayal of the Third Reich in World War II-comics like "The Invaders", "The Crusaders" etc...)
But, imagine Bruce Willis swinging through some window to rescue Kim Basinger who has been kidnapped by the Führer to breed new aryans or some shit like that. I mean, why didn't Indy kick his ass in "Indiana Jones Part III"?
Without Hitler there wouldn't have been a Superman or Lex Luthor or Dr.Doom or whatever they're called.

Salon.com - Was Hitler human? - an round-table-interview with John Cusack and others concerning "Max"

"Menno Meyjes: I think that Hitler was a new kind of man, who came from a little mountain village to the big city and picked up all these hatreds, and had this insane desire to be famous. And he understood fame in a very modern way, which very few people did in those days. Who was famous in those days? Hindenburg, generals were famous, politicians. I mean, Charlie Chaplin had barely been invented. But those pressures are very strong to this day -- people fear anonymity. He needed that kind of mass recognition in order to know himself.

Salon: So he was the first modern man in that sense?

Menno Meyjes: Absolutely.

Sidney Blumenthal: Hitler was such a nullity as a human being, a man filled with raw feelings of disgust and self-loathing. His genius, which was an evil one, was to have the capacity to articulate that in a way that appealed to those feelings in others, which in postwar Germany turned out to be a mass audience.

Salon:The film says that Hitler was a failure as an artist, but he succeeded in turning politics into art.

John Cusack: Yes, he ended up becoming a black artist, someone whose art was to set the world on fire."
