Medien:

For sale: Britain’s underground city

"WELCOME to Cold War City (population: 4). It covers 240 acres and has 60 miles of roads and its own railway station. It even includes a pub called the Rose and Crown. (...) It has a Wiltshire address, but it is 120ft underground.

The subterranean complex that was built in the 1950s to house the Conservative prime minister Harold Macmillan’s cabinet and 4,000 civil servants in the event of a Soviet nuclear attack is being thrown open to commercial use. Just four maintenance men are left."

Boilerplate and his amazing friends

"Read illustrated accounts of the world's first robot, the Steam Man, created in 1865! Subsequent automatons such as the Electric Man and the Automatic Man are also profiled. The most comprehensive section, with more than 20 pages, concerns the mechanical man known as Boilerplate.

Boilerplate was unveiled in 1893 by Professor Archibald Campion. Built as a prototype soldier for use in resolving the conflicts of nations, Boilerplate served with Roosevelt's Rough Riders and fought alongside Pancho Villa"

PEOPLE:

A message from The Rod

"New Propagandhi guitarist Glen has been acting very strange lately. I don’t know what it is. That last dweeb (Hairy Hannah) gave me the creeps and Glen is following a little too close in his footsteps. I’m not sure what to expect on this upcoming tour. One of Glens neighbors said they saw him scurrying down the ally in a housecoat and green leotards. Apparently, his eyes were darting back and forth quickly as he ate the edge crust off of a pizza. Don’t worry though, I’m going to have a talk with him and make sure he can hold it together for the tour."

On the new record “Potemkin City Limits”: "So far the response has been really great give or take a few dweebs. One particular fellow rated the new record 'less than a fart'. Which in my world is not good because I hate farts but in Jord’s world that is a really good rating because he LOVES farts! I don’t know what to think about that assessment."

MEDIA:

Osama

"The media implant fear and helplessness in the psyche of the people of Europe and the U.S. ... what enemies of the U.S. cannot do, its media are doing!(...) Bin Laden's rise to prominence mirrors the latest phase in the Information Age, the techniques of which he has adroitly mastered. In a 10-year period from 1994 to 2004 that coincides with the emergence of a virtual universe — moving from print to the Internet, from wired to wireless communication around the globe — bin Laden has crafted a series of carefully staged statements designed for new media. They include interviews with Western and Arab journalists, handwritten letters scanned onto discs, faxes, and audiotapes, and above all video recordings distributed via the first independent Arabic-language news outlet, the Qatari satellite television station Al-Jazeera. Those are the texts that were sent to me and proposed as the core of a volume dedicated to making informed critical discussion of Osama's outlook possible for a broader public, one not limited to secretive government agencies and counterterrorism experts." Story at chronicle.com by Bruce B. Lawrence, "professor of Islamic studies at Duke University. He has edited and written an introduction to Messages to the World: The Statements of Osama bin Laden, to be published by Verso this month."

POLITICS:

The CIA is rethinking the distinction between open sources and secrets

"Judging from their words, too many policymakers and intelligence officers mistake secrecy for intelligence. President Nixon, for example, once belittled the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in words that capture the common mistake: 'What use are they? They’ve got over 40,000 people over there reading newspapers.' The president’s remarks, reflecting a persistent misperception, echo even now within the Intelligence Community."

Many Security Deadlines Missed Since 9/11

"The Bush administration has missed dozens of deadlines set by Congress after the Sept. 11 attacks for developing ways to protect airplanes, ships and railways from terrorists. A plan to defend ships and ports from attack is six months overdue. Rules to protect air cargo from infiltration by terrorists are two months late. A study on the cost of giving anti-terrorism training to federal law enforcement officers who fly commercially was supposed to be done more than three years ago." AP/Yahoo

'Muppets' May Return to Primetime TV

"The Muppets could come back to primetime television with their own reality show. ABC has ordered a script and five episode outlines for 'America's Next Muppet,' in which viewers may join in choosing the newest member of the puppet family that includes Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, a network spokeswoman said Tuesday.

The premise has the ring of such shows as 'American Idol' or 'America's Next Top Model,' in which the audience picks potential new stars. " AP/Orlando Sentinel
