POLITICS:
Paris Riots 2005 Is that still a "riot" or is it a "civil war" already? Has anyone ever heard of a "riot" like that? The arms of modern communication are in the hands of the people. The evildoers use military strategies and get organized with cellphones or on the internet. The cops can't handle the situation because they don't have any military training and they're not supposed to "search and destroy". Whatever you think about the cops, that's not what they do. They're not in charge of killing. So, it's only a matter of time until everyone will cry for the army and the tanks to come in. But that would be an official "civil war"! A lot of folks would get killed. The situation would get completely out of control. Something big is happening in Paris right now.

Michael Moore Owned Halliburton, Defense Stocks "Michael Moore denounces oil and defense contractors as war profiteers. He also claims to have no stock portfolio, yet he owns shares in Halliburton, Boeing, and Honeywell and does his postproduction work in Canada to avoid paying union wages in the United States. Noam Chomsky opposes the very concept of private property and calls the Pentagon “the worst institution in human history,” yet he and his wife have made millions of dollars in contract work for the Department of Defense and own two luxurious homes. Barbra Streisand prides herself as an environmental activist, yet she owns shares in a notorious strip-mining company. In his blockbuster new book 'Do As I Say (Not As I Do): Profiles in Liberal Hypocrisy,' Hoover Fellow Schweizer reveals the glaring contradictions between the public stances and real-life behavior of prominent liberals."

MUNICH The trailer for Steven Spielbergs take on the terror of the Munich Olympics in 1972 is online. Dank Steven Spielberg werden die Deutschen und die Anti-Deutschen bald reichlich zu diskutieren haben! "The original title of the film was VENGEANCE - and that title creates an altogether different thought about a film regarding the Munich Olympics... as most people know, the people behind the terror of the Munich Olympics were each hunted down and killed. It was pure assassination. Something, "the good guys" aren't supposed to do." aintitcool.com

Corporate Responsibility and Freedom of expression "Concerned by allegations that some American companies in the Internet sector are cooperating with authoritarian governments to censor speech and imprison dissidents, and by recent revelations of the role allegedly played by Yahoo! in the prison sentencing of a Chinese journalist, a group of 25 investment managers, research houses, foundations, and religious investors have called on Internet businesses to publicly state support for freedom of expression world wide and agreed to monitor operations of Internet businesses in repressive regime countries." The Barnes & Noble Experience "One of the first things I learned while working at Barnes & Noble was that you should never, ever pay for a book. You can read an entire goddamn novel in the store and we won't bug you once. If you'd rather the convenience of reading at home, simply pay for the book, keep the reciept, and finish it within fourteen days. Even if you say "I didn't like it." they'll take it back. If this surprises you, then you should be even more surprised to learn that this is B&N's version of a strict return policy; recently changed from 'If we carry it, you can return it; no questions asked.' You'd be surprised at the number of people who do this; many seemingly consider Barnes & Noble a library that just happens to require safety deposits." Read the whole thing!

"Star Wars: Episodes I-VI - The greatest postmodern art film ever." by Aidan Wasley "As literary critics have long pointed out, the arbitrary yoking together of events in the service of storytelling is one of the fundamental characteristics of all narrative.(...) The audience's willing surrender to narrative coincidence is demanded by the story's need to conclude itself. But Lucas takes this self-consciousness about narrative artifice a step further: He makes explicit his theoretical interest in the mechanics of plot. As viewers, we take pleasure in the implausible events that must happen for the narrative contraption to snap shut in a satisfying way. But the characters come to understand that there is another agent, external to themselves, that is dictating the action. The Force is, in other words, a metaphor for, or figuration of, the demands of narrative. The Force is the power of plot." Over at Slate

Why is the vice president deciding how the U.S. treats foreign detainees? "Today's revelations in the New York Times about the Bush administration's internal debate over how to treat foreign detainees highlight the unprecedented role that Vice President Dick Cheney and his staff are playing in setting national security policy. In the Constitution, the vice president is the nation's understudy. He is not supposed to be in the chain of command. Cheney knows this better than most: In 1989, when he was George H.W. Bush's secretary of defense, Cheney slapped down Vice President Dan Quayle for calling a meeting of the National Security Council about a coup attempt in the Philippines while the president was out of the country." What's a Modern Girl to Do? "When I entered college in 1969, women were bursting out of their 50's chrysalis, shedding girdles, padded bras and conventions. The Jazz Age spirit flared in the Age of Aquarius. Women were once again imitating men and acting all independent: smoking, drinking, wanting to earn money and thinking they had the right to be sexual, this time protected by the pill. I didn't fit in with the brazen new world of hard-charging feminists. I was more of a fun-loving (if chaste) type who would decades later come to life in Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie Bradshaw. I hated the grubby, unisex jeans and no-makeup look and drugs that zoned you out, and I couldn't understand the appeal of dances that didn't involve touching your partner." Maureen Dowd has a look at modern feminism in The New York Times

"9/11 - The Movie" starring Nicholas Cage Update: the movie will be called "World Trade Center." "Oliver Stone has begun shooting one of the first Hollywood films about Sept. 11 in New York -- without recreating the large-scale devastation that's all too familiar to residents who lived through the 2001 attacks.(...) Most of the major action portraying the World Trade Center collapse will be shot on a Los Angeles sound stage. And although news footage of the towers themselves will be shown during the film, it will play on television screens in the background. 'We're not doing the 'Towering Inferno-Titanic' version,' said Michael Shamberg, who's producing the Paramount film with his partner, Stacey Sher." Fulls story in the Hollywood Reporter
