"TRANSCRIPT OF JESUS CHRIST'S REMARKS AT A REPUBLICAN PARTY FUND-RAISER, CRAWFORD, TEXAS, AUGUST 2005

Thank you, Mr. Chairman. I'm going to have a hard time living up to an introduction like that. (LAUGHTER)

America is no longer fighting the global war on terrorism

"The Administration has replaced, or revised, or expanded the G.W.O.T. with a new phrase: “a global struggle against violent extremism.” The war is now a struggle. The terrorist enemy is now the violent extremist enemy. The focus has shifted from a tactic to an ideology. In a major new strategy document quoted in U.S. News & World Report, the Pentagon is even more specific (and more accurate), venturing onto delicate ground by calling the threat “Islamist extremism” and “extremist Sunni and Shia movements that exploit Islam for political ends.” In June, a Marine lieutenant general, Wallace Gregson, floated the new thinking in a speech: “This is no more a war on terrorism than the Second World War was a war on submarines,” he said.

Network of top scientists helped 'Angel of Death' Mengele

"The "Angel of Death" Josef Mengele, who was long thought to have been the black sheep of Germany's scientists under the Nazi regime, was in fact supported by a network of elite researchers, new research has revealed. (...) Six years of research led by a political scientist, Dr Susanne Heim, has revealed that the Angel of Death was not alone.

Archives have previously revealed that Mengele had assistants such as the Hungarian pathologist and prisoner of war Miklos Nyiszli, who said: "I would bathe the corpses of cripples and dwarves in calcium chloride and cook them in large pots so that their skeletons could be preserved in the Museum of the Third Reich."

But records have been unearthed that Mengele's work was supported by elite researchers attached to the Kaiser-Wilhelm Institute, whose scientists have been awarded more than 20 Nobel prizes.

Although their personal goal was not essentially to create a super-race for Adolf Hitler, they did not object to the scientific freedom that the dictator bestowed on them. Indeed, Mengele's supervisor for his PhD was the internationally acclaimed scientist Otmar von Verschuer, who was renowned for his research into twins.

The Max-Planck Institute - formerly the Kaiser-Wilhelm Institute - decided in 1997 to fund research into its murky past. A spokesman for the institute said: 'No goal in research can justify crossing ethical boundaries.'"

Brand USA is in trouble, so take a lesson from Big Mac

"Instead of changing his foreign policy, President Bush is changing the story

Last Tuesday, George Bush delivered a major address on his plan to fight terrorism with democracy in the Arab world. On the same day, McDonald's launched a massive advertising campaign urging Americans to fight obesity by eating healthily and exercising. Any similarities between McDonald's "Go Active! American Challenge" and Bush's "Go Democratic! Arabian Challenge" are purely coincidental.

Sure, there is a certain irony in being urged to get off the couch by the company that popularised the "drive-thru", helpfully allowing customers to consume a bagged heart attack without having to get out of the car and walk to the counter. And there is a similar irony to Bush urging the people of the Middle East to remove "the mask of fear" because "fear is the foundation of every dictatorial regime", when that fear is the direct result of US decisions to install and arm the regimes that have systematically terrorised for decades. But since both campaigns are exercises in rebranding, that means facts are besides the point."

The Nature of CIA Intervention in Venezuela

"Philip Agee is a former CIA operative who left the agency in 1967 after becoming disillusioned by the CIA’s support for the status quo in the region. Says Agee, “I began to realize that what I and my colleagues had been doing in Latin America in the CIA was no more than a continuation of nearly five-hundred years of this, exploitation and genocide and so forth. And I began to think about what, until then would have been unthinkable, which was to write a book on how it all works.” The book, Inside the Company: CIA Diary, was an instant best-seller and was eventually published in over thirty languages. In 1978, three years after the publication of CIA Diary, Agee and a group of like-minded journalists began publishing the Covert Operations Information Bulletin (now Covert Action Quarterly), as part of a strategy of “guerilla journalism” aimed at destabilizing the CIA and exposing their operations.

Not surprisingly, the response of the US government and the CIA in particular to Agee’s work has been somewhat aggressive, and he has been forced to divide his time since the 1970s between Germany and Cuba."

The coming crackdown on blogging? Why not ban stickers too?

This News.com story should be read by everyone, kids! I quote from boingboing.net:

"In an interview with Bradley Smith, one of the six commissioners at the Federal Election Commission, Declan McCullagh explores potential internet impact of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 -- aka the McCain-Feingold law. The bottom line: the law could be applied in a manner that curtails free speech on blogs, email and other forms of free online expression.

In 2002, the FEC decided that the law should not apply to Internet communication, but a U.S. District overturned that decision last fall. Smith and two fellow Republican commissioners wanted to appeal, but because the commission's three Democrats refused to join, what Smith calls a "bizarre" regulatory process is not taking place.

Technically, McCain-Feingold applies to political partisanism and the way grassroots internet activity amounts to virtual campaign contributions. But critics say the law could be extended to cover many forms of politically-related comments or opinions on the internet, since generally all such expressions are by definition partisan. Does McCain-Feingold herald the beginning of government-mandated internet censorship?

McCullagh: What happens next?

Smith: It's going to be a battle, and if nobody in Congress is willing to stand up and say, "Keep your hands off of this, and we'll change the statute to make it clear," then I think grassroots Internet activity is in danger. The impact would affect e-mail lists, especially if there's any sense that they're done in coordination with the campaign. If I forward something from the campaign to my personal list of several hundred people, which is a great grassroots activity, that's what we're talking about having to look at. Senators McCain and Feingold have argued that we have to regulate the Internet, that we have to regulate e-mail. They sued us in court over this and they won.

McCullagh: If Congress doesn't change the law, what kind of activities will the FEC have to target?

Smith: We're talking about any decision by an individual to put a link (to a political candidate) on their home page, set up a blog, send out mass e-mails, any kind of activity that can be done on the Internet.

Smith: Again, blogging could also get us into issues about online journals and non-online journals. Why should CNET get an exemption but not an informal blog? Why should Salon or Slate get an exemption? Should Nytimes.com and Opinionjournal.com get an exemption but not online sites, just because the newspapers have a print edition as well?

Update: Greg Klass says,

You might want to alert your readers who aren't famiar with Bradley Smith that he is an arch foe of campaign finance regulation, whom the Republicans managed to put on the Federal Election Commission. Link to background. I would take any scary predictions he spreads about consquences of recent major changes to the campaign finance law (a.k.a. McCain-Feingold) with more than a few grains of salt.

DID SOMEONE WITH A PROSTHETIC DEVICE KILL NICK BERG?

The video of the beheading of Nick Berg came just in time to go for this revenge-sheme which will make people in the US forget what their country has become by now. The CIA has already identified arch-villain Abu Musab al-Zarqawi as the man with the knife. But, according to an article in the 'National Review', Zarqawi has lost a leg.

"WHO IS ZARQAWI? A Palestinian-Jordanian and veteran of the Afghan war against the Soviets, Zarqawi first appeared as a terror suspect when Jordan indicted him in absentia for his role in the al Qaeda millennial bombing plot targeting the Radison SAS hotel in Amman as well as other American, Israeli, and Christian religious sites in Jordan. In 2000 he returned to Afghanistan, where he oversaw a terrorist training camp and specialized in chemical and biological weapons. (...)

Zarqawi's own movements are themselves telling. After being wounded in the leg in Afghanistan, Zarqawi escaped to Iran. While there, he dispatched two Palestinians and a Jordanian who entered Turkey illegally from Iran on their way to conduct bombing attacks in Israel. (...)

From Iran Zarqawi traveled to Iraq in May 2002, where his wounded leg was amputated and the limb fitted with a prosthetic device. He spent two months recovering in Baghdad, at which time "nearly two dozen extremists converged on Baghdad and established a base of operations there." Powell informed that "these Al Qaida affiliates, based in Baghdad, now coordinate the movement of people, money and supplies into and throughout Iraq for his network, and they've now been operating freely in the capital for more than eight months."

While Iraq maintained it was unaware of the whereabouts of Zarqawi or other terrorists, Powell informed the Security Council that the United States passed information to Iraqi authorities on Zarqawi's location in the Iraqi capitol via a third party."

But does the man wielding the knife in that video look like he has a prosthetic device and why do the hooded captors look like they're in parade rest? Things are getting really ugly now...

And then there is the sad case of the beheading of U.S. civilian Nick Berg in Iraq whose father has just spoken to the Pennsylvania News:

"Michael Berg lashed out at the U.S. military and Bush administration, saying his son might still be alive had he not been detained by U.S. officials in Iraq without being charged and without access to a lawyer.

Nick Berg, a small telecommunications business owner, spoke to his parents on March 24 and told them he would return home on March 30. But Berg was detained by Iraqi police at a checkpoint in Mosul on March 24. He was turned over to U.S. officials and detained for 13 days.

His father, Michael, said his son wasn't allowed to make phone calls or contact a lawyer.

FBI agents visited Berg's parents in West Chester on March 31 and told the family they were trying to confirm their son's identity. On April 5, the Bergs filed suit in federal court in Philadelphia, contending that their son was being held illegally by the U.S. military. The next day Berg was released...

R21 - A widespread system of torture and abuse/ The Red Cross president personally warned Rice, Powell and Wolfowitz

"There was a before 9/11, and there was an after 9/11. After 9/11 the gloves came off." -Cofer Black, head of the CIA Counterterrorist Center, September 2003

The troops torture their own people to make them hard enough to torture prisoners. We're not talking about a handful of soldiers in one prison only. The story unfolds and Rumsfeld tries to get away with a cheesy courtroom-drama on TV and some "they killed some of our boys too"-revenge-plot . It's frightening how clueless and helpless George W.Bush and his buddies really are.

An officer of british special units dewcribed a system called R21 (Resistance to Interrogation), "a system of degradation developed for use by British and US troops called R2I - resistance to interrogation - which uses sexual jibes and stripping prisoners to prolong 'the shock of capture' when detainees are at their most vulnerable."

"In visits to Iraq's US-administered prison, The Red Cross has been documenting abuse that was not the 'exception' but was close to the norm - abuse that was 'tantamount' to a policy of torture, and tolerated by coalition forces. (...) And what has become increasingly clear in the past few days, in interviews with returning special forces soldiers from Iraq, was that the techniques employed at Abu Ghraib were not simply for the cruel entertainment of military policemen and private contractors running the prison, but an even crueller application of abusive interrogation techniques taught to both US and British special forces. " From a long exclusive story in The Observer

The paper also revealed that "The Red Cross president, Jakob Kellenberger, had personally warned three of George W. Bush's most senior officials - National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of State Colin Powell and Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz - of widespread abuse tantamount to torture." (...) The revelations threaten to drag the British government into the heart of the international scandal over coalition abuse at Abu Ghraib. It follows claims in yesterday's Guardian that the humiliating sexual abuse at the jail was consistent with procedures taught to British and American special forces. British military intelligence officers were interrogating prisoners in the notorious Abu Ghraib jail in Iraq even as the first reports of abuses at the prison came to light. (...) The disclosure will put fresh pressure on British Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon to clarify when he first heard of allegations of mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners amid claims from the Red Cross that British officials were alerted in November." Full story in The Observer

According to prominent New York attorney Scott Horton, partner at Patterson, Belknap, Webb and Tyler chairing the Committee on International Law of the Association of the Bar of New York City, senior officers warned that Bush appointees in the Pentagon were undermining prisoner safeguards long before the abuse at Abu Ghraib became public. Horton and other members of the New York bar began to compile a report examining U.S. and international legal standards governing the treatment of military prisoners.

"The bar association's 110-page report, released last week, leaves no doubt that the practices revealed at Abu Ghraib violated both U.S. and international law. During the preparation of that report, Horton and his colleagues were more concerned with practices in Afghanistan and Guantánamo than in Iraq. What they have learned recently, however, suggests that questionable practices and attitudes toward prisoners stem from broad policy decisions made at the very highest levels of the Defense Department.´

WHO WATCHES THE WATCHMEN? - Private Security and the New Economy of War

T H E P R E S S :

Washington fields mercenary army in Iraq:

"According to recent estimates there are around 15,000 private bodyguards and security personnel operating inside Iraq, of which at least 6,000 are believed to be armed—making them the second biggest military presence after the US Army. The number is set to increase even further—in what is being described as an Iraqi Klondike—after the so-called handover of sovereignty to the Iraqi Governing Council on June 30."

Mercenaries and private security firms are increasingly assuming the task of regular troops world-wide :

"US forces, but even the United Nations and Iraqi insurgents are increasingly making use of the service of private companies or individuals guarantee their safety or conduct military operations.

The coalition forces in Iraq are coming under increasing pressure from insurgents. Security and military companies are profiting from the situation by assuming tasks which were formerly reserved to the military. Employees of private security firms meanwhile constitute the second largest military contingent in Iraq, numbering around 25 thousand people - more than the entire British force. Private companies guarantee the flow of supplies, train troops and service computers. Their employees are former soldiers, officers or secret service members. The trend towards privatisation is not confined to Iraq. Such companies operate everywhere in the world, from Columbia to Afghanistan. "

Outsource This!:

"Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld viewed the war in Iraq as an opportunity to validate his theory that the overwhelming technological advantages enjoyed by the United States would allow a small, mobile ground force supported by high-tech weaponry to achieve military victory. Rumsfeld and other civilians in the Pentagon overruled the military commanders on the size of the force that would invade Iraq, and bet that the lightning ground assault and precision air attacks would enable us take control of the country largely intact.  As a result, we were left woefully unprepared to provide basic security in the days and weeks immediately after the fall of Saddam's regime, an error that we are still paying for in blood and treasure more than a year later."

Senators seek investigation into private security firms in Iraq (reported by AP on April 29, 2004 already)

"Earlier this month, 13 Democrats wrote Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld to argue that it is a dangerous precedent to allow private armies to operate outside the control of a governmental authority. Dozens of companies are operating in Iraq under contract with the Coalition Provisional Authority, the U.S.-led governing body in Iraq, plus the Defense Department and other U.S. agencies. Thousands of others are on assignments for the United States and others worldwide, protecting buildings, guarding officials, and training police and soldiers. The senators asked the GAO to address the private contractors' liabilities, including whether they are subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice and who has jurisdiction to punish them if they commit crimes."

25 recorded deaths in US military custody! RUMSFELD HAS TO RESIGN!

"US military policemen moved unregistered Iraqi prisoners, known as "ghost detainees", around an army-run jail at Abu Ghraib, in order to hide them from the Red Cross, according to a confidential military report.

The report on abuses at Abu Ghraib prison - a copy of which was obtained by the Guardian - described the practice of hiding prisoners as "deceptive, contrary to army doctrine, and in violation of international law".

The revelations surfaced at a time when the prison abuse scandal threatened to engulf the Pentagon and the military occupation of Iraq.

The US army yesterday admitted to the Senate there was evidence of widespread abuse of prisoners in military-run jails in both Iraq and Afghanistan. There have been a total of 25 recorded deaths in US military custody in both countries."

Full story in The Guardian: Jailed Iraqis hidden from Red Cross, says US army.

A 53-page Pentagon report obtained by The New Yorker, written by Major General Antonio M. Taguba and not meant for public release, completed in late February. It listed some of the abuse:

"Breaking chemical lights and pouring the phosphoric liquid on detainees; pouring cold water on naked detainees; beating detainees with a broom handle and a chair; threatening male detainees with rape; allowing a military police guard to stitch the wound of a detainee who was injured after being slammed against the wall in his cell; sodomizing a detainee with a chemical light and perhaps a broom stick, and using military working dogs to frighten and intimidate detainees with threats of attack, and in one instance actually biting a detainee.

Taguba found that between October and December of 2003 there were numerous instances of 'sadistic, blatant, and wanton criminal abuses' at Abu Ghraib. This systematic and illegal abuse of detainees, Taguba reported, was perpetrated by soldiers of the 372nd Military Police Company, and also by members of the American intelligence community."

The story by Seymour M. Hersh came along with some nasty pictures . The US-military has hired corporate soldiers of fortune to help out their troops and they were just doing what they were trained to do. Torture seems to be quite normal for the US-military, but the president and his minister of defense blame it on bureaucracy. They just didn't know. They had other things to do. Can the US-gouvernment really get away with this that easy? Not accepting the world-court for war-criminals in Den Haag and treating other people like Untermenschen? Richard Nixon resigned for way less! It's about time for Mr.Rumsfeld to go home at least!

" If I, a single individual maintaining a web page in my spare time, was well aware of the abuses being reported in the US prisons in Iraq, the only way the top generals, Pentagon officials, senior Administration policy-makers such as the President and Vice-President, and U.S. reporters could be ignorant of them is if they willfully chose to be ignorant."

Music of the Holocaust

"Music was heard in many ghettos, concentration camps, and partisan outposts of Nazi-controlled Europe. While popular songs dating from before the war remained attractive as escapist fare, the ghetto, camp, and partisan settings also gave rise to a repertoire of new works. These included topical songs inspired by the latest gossip and news, and songs of personal expression that often concerned the loss of family and home.

Classical music—instrumental works, art songs, opera—was also produced and performed during this period, notably by prisoners at the Theresienstadt (Terezin) ghetto and transit camp in Czechoslovakia, as well as in several other ghettos and camps.

For many victims of Nazi brutality, music was an important means of preserving and asserting their humanity. Such music—particularly the topical songs—also serves as a form of historical documentation. Like “audio snapshots,” these works offer a telling glimpse into the events and emotions that their creators and original audiences experienced firsthand."
