Jamie Lidell, a boywonder

Everyone who ever met Jamie will agree that he is simply the nicest guy in the neighbourhood. Before he went on tour a short time ago, he spent his last night working on the soundtrack for Colin Raffs radioshow-project which has a cast that reads like a "who is who" of international artists who chose Berin as their base of operations (I speak the part of the german scientist studying bizarre rituals in Brandenburg).
I didn't really follow Jamies early stuff and didn't care much about Supercollider when I was introduced to him a few years ago. It was his birthday and he was having a dinner-party at the Gorgonzola Club which got a little out of hand. In the end Jamie, Martin B. and myself had to carry Mr. Fall-asleep-too-much out of the place after he was standing on a chair, ranting and spilling red wine all over everybody. Well, Berlin, it's a rowdy place! A few months or years later I saw Jamies musical performance at the Hebbel theatre. It was that legendary voodoo-evening hosted by Darius James, sort of written by Mr. Raff and all the "who is who"-people played their part one way or another. Jamie was last and he killed the audience with this unbelievable sound. A genius in action! I never heard anything like that, it was the most intense noise ever produced. The audience tried to escape as fast as possible until there was nobody left except for me and some other deaf old punkrockers.

Now Mr. Lidell put out a new record on Warp Records called "Multiply" which was co-produced by Mocky, another one of those talented exiled artists who just moved to Berlin (there is a free MP3 for you at tonspion.de!). This is probably the best record coming out of Berlin this year!
Jamie has turned into a crooner and proves that he's got real soul! This aint no cheap imitation of Marvin Gaye as you might think after reading some of the reviews, this is the real shit, I guess. I play it all the time and I play it really loud until the cops come over and confiscate my stereo.

To impress us, they stole Lemmys speed and they just made it into Face Magazine, May edition, page 58. Have a look at their big, big website with plenty of naugthy pictures.

Lords of Chaos - The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground

by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind (Feral House, USA,1998)

Venom, Slayer, King Diamond. And then there were Mayhem, Darkthrone and those church-burning metal-nazis from Norway. I heard about them for the first time, when Peaceville Records sent out their famous press release around 1994. The label agreed to produce "Transilvanian hunger" by Darkthrone, but they refused to promote it or advertise the record. By then it was obvious that some metalheads had started their own cult, interpreting Anton LaVeys "Satanic Bible" and Aleister Crowleys "magic spells" in their own way. After the legendary cover-story in "Kerrang Magazine" No. 436 (1993), the media jumped at it. They made Varg Vikernes from Norway, who killed his friend Euronymous, a hero for nazis like Hendrik Möbius from East-Germany who killed Sandro Beyer in 1993. There is a german book called "Satanskinder" by Liane v. Billerbeck and Frank Nordhausen, which is looking at this one case without really understanding the background. "Lords of Chaos" looks at the big picture and features tons of interviews with members of the various "satanic bands", cops, priests, journalists and a handful of armchair-satanists. The book looks at the origin of Black Metal and tries to conect this extreme form of music with a legacy of murder, suicide and more than 100 churches torched. Not a bad cultural study, but "Lords of Chaos" fails to follow the trail of real neo-nazis. It concentrates on norwegian folklore and the theatrical poses of Heavy Metal in general which have been around since the early days of Kiss and Alice Cooper. Not bad and definetely worth reading for everyone who ever tried corpsepaint for Halloween.

Michael Moynihan, who also plays in Blood Axis, is a strange figure. "Ask some people, and they'll tell you Michael Moynihan is a gentleman and a scholar. Ask others, and they'll tell you he's a clear and present danger to modern America, a crypto-Nazi spreading an insidious agenda through the music of Blood Axis and several other music project, and his underground-hit book Lords of Chaos. Moynihan, who wrote Lords of Chaos to document the violent black metal scene in Scandinavia in the early '90s, just seems to attract the most virulent kind of criticism. Anti-racist watchdog groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center have claimed that Lords of Chaos furthered a white supremacist agenda, and the dark, archaic imagery of Blood Axis has likewise been a magnet for controversy."

FAT MIKE AND HIS BUDDIES ROCK AGAINST BUSH

"Punk arseholes against Bush CMU reports on punkers banding together against the President. Yeah great, a bunch of ignorant morons bleating on about stuff they have no idea about. This should be fun to watch.

Rock The Vote - but with a political agenda - we like it! Good Charlotte, Pennywise, Green Day, NOFX , Alkaline Trio and Sum 41 have all agreed to participate in a new compilation album called 'Rock Against Bush'. Organised by NOFX singer Fat Mike, who owns independent label Fat Wreck Chords, the album will try to encourage the punk community to take an interest in politics, and more importantly to use their vote against the Bush administration. The album will be accompanied by a number of live shows immediately after its release, and in the lead up to the election itself.

Fat Mike: "About a year ago I decided to use my influence to get bands together to speak out about the president. I think it's our responsibility as citizens and musicians to do so. He's wrecking the country and the world. He's starting wars for no reason, our economy is in the toilet, he's ruining the environment, and he does things like cut taxes when we need money. We're trying to build a coalition of kids 18 to 25. We want punks and other disenfranchised young people to vote as a block, which no one has ever done before. Kids are the biggest group of people that don't vote. We want to change that."

Mike admits that the name 'Rock Against Bush' might cause opposition at some colleges and radio stations and that a name change may be required. "Certain colleges won't advertise it as Rock Against Bush, and a lot of radio stations won't mention the name either. So we may just call it the Punkvoter tour or something, but to us it will always be Rock Against Bush."

DESPERATELY LOOKING FOR A COMEBACK

The leftovers of Queen and Ben Elton wrote a musical. Isn't that nice? Here's the official info:

"The time is the future, in a place that was once called Earth. Globalisation is complete!

Everywhere, the kids watch the same movies, wear the same fashions and think the same thoughts.

It's a safe, happy, Ga Ga world. Unless you're a rebel. Unless you want to Rock. On Planet Mall all musical instruments are banned. The Company Computers generate the tunes and everybody downloads them. It is an age of Boy Bands and of Girl Bands. Of Boy and Girl Bands. Of Girl Bands with a couple of boys in them that look like girls anyway. Nothing is left to chance, hits are scheduled years in advance.

Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality

But Resistance is growing. Underneath the gleaming cities, down in the lower depths live the Bohemians. Rebels who believe that there was once a Golden Age when the kids formed their own bands and wrote their own songs. They call that time, The Rhapsody.

Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see

Legend persists that somewhere on Planet Mall instruments still exist. Somewhere, the mighty axe of a great and hairy guitar god lies buried deep in rock. The Bohemians need a hero to find this axe and draw it from stone."

Then go to this website and check out the picture for "We will rock you". What's that woman doing beetween the guy's legs? Why is everyone looking somewhere else? Ga Ga?

ADAM ANT: THE MADNESS OF PRINCE CHARMING

Adam Ant has shot a documentary about himself which was aired on C4 in July. There is no new record to sell or any other marketing-sheme behind it. Basically he's talking about his manic depression, I heard. Did anyone tape this? Fuck, I loved Adam and the Ants when I was a kid.

"Adam Ant was an '80s icon, one of the decade's biggest stars. He sold records by the million, adorned thousands of bedroom walls and hundreds of magazine covers. But he was also plagued by mental illness, fighting a daily battle against demons that threatened to overwhelm him, and even take his life. With the full and exclusive co-operation of Adam Ant and some of his closest friends and mentors, this film tells the inside story of a thrilling, chaotic, turbulent and troubled life. It is a life that has seen the highs of No.1 hits, and the lows of obsessive stalkers and terrifying depressive episodes.

It is also a life that famously reached its nadir in 2002, when Adam Ant was arrested following an incident in a London pub. In this remarkably frank portrait, Adam reflects on his glory days, his spectacular fall from grace, and the depression that's haunted him for more than 30 years."
