When Big Bird spoke on the floor of Congress

WFMU has a great old story on "Sesame Street": "When Newt Gingrich's Contract with America threatened to cut their funding in 1993, PBS's allies arranged for Big Bird to speak on the floor of Congress. The non existent yellow creature addressed a full session of the House Of Representatives in November, 1993, and the over-sized puppet's persuasive talents proved to be significant, as funding for the Corporation of Public Broadcasting (CPB) was ultimately maintained."

"The Daily Show" with Jon Stewart

I met another person from the US last night who has never heard of this show. Even though host Jon Stewart (author of "America- The Book") will also host the Academy Awards this year...

"The Daily Show" takes a satirical look at american politics and the last show was one of the best ones I've seen yet: "Speakers at Coretta Scott King's funeral talk about Bush as if he isn't right behind them." The Daily Show. Guest: Harrison.Ford. 02.08.06 (Torrent)

The IT Crowd

A lot of people have been waiting for this geek-comedy on Channel 4 and it's hilarious. The show was written by Graham Linehan, who also wrote the cult favorite "Father Ted". You might enjoy his blog too.

The episodes come out online for free before they premiere on TV, but I'd rather try this really fast Torrent instead of waiting for Media Player to crash your system.

Fight the net! - The US military's plans for "information operations"

The Pentagon came up with the "Information Operations Roadmap"in 2003 already. Now it was obtained by the National Security Archive at George Washington University using the Freedom of Information Act.

Read the story over at BBC.

Quotes: "It seems to see the internet as being equivalent to an enemy weapons system.

'Strategy should be based on the premise that the Department [of Defense] will 'fight the net' as it would an enemy weapons system,' it reads.

The slogan 'fight the net' appears several times throughout the roadmap. (...) And, in a grand finale, the document recommends that the United States should seek the ability to 'provide maximum control of the entire electromagnetic spectrum'.

US forces should be able to 'disrupt or destroy the full spectrum of globally emerging communications systems, sensors, and weapons systems dependent on the electromagnetic spectrum'."

Never mind the "freedom of the press"...

"You are Germany" - The invasion of german tag-tanks in the global blogosphere

"On Thursday, Jens Scholz was forwarded an e-mail originally sent by one Jean-Remy von Matt. Von Matt is one of the principal architects of a slightly bizarre 'Du bist Deutschland' ('You are Germany') public service ad campaign, mentioned here last September, which is currently urging the German public to essentially buck up and show a little gumption so the old economy can get going.

The campaign is getting a decidedly mixed reception, and Herr Jean Remy von Matt was upset with his thankless audience; where was all this naysaying coming from? Sure, his envious competitors were one source, but von Matt -- to the delight of German bloggers -- didn't leave it at that; the 'glum response' was also: "weblogs, the toilet walls of the Internet:What on earth gives every computer owner the right to secrete his opinion unasked? And most bloggers just secrete. This new low in opinion making becomes clear when one searches www.technorati.com for: Du bist Deutschland." More over here...

Links: Anglofritz and coeruleus on the current vibe in Germany. Jens Scholz started it. See all those pictures from those funny Germans.

Even more flickr fun. Show us your toilet: Here is the one from the bar next door and here is my toilet wall at home.

"How Google and Its Rivals Rewrote the Rules of Business and Transformed Our Culture"

"So: is Google a good thing? The geek in me wants to say yes. It certainly has made finding information incomparably easier. Some of the information is even true . . . Actually, that’s not fair, but a lot of what is on the net is false, and the Google-derived mistake is something you do now notice in the mainstream media. >One example occurred on the death of Hunter S. Thompson. When he died, several newspapers shared with us, often in the opening sentence, President Nixon’s opinion that ‘Hunter S. Thompson represented the dark, venal and incurably violent side of the American character.’ Except (as any Hunter S. Thompson fan will tell you) Nixon didn’t say that about Thompson, Thompson said it about Nixon. But a site giving the line the wrong way around was the first thing to come up on Google on the day of Thompson’s death."
