Kid Deuce: "When these photographs of Chicano "placas" (wall writing) were made in the early 1970s gangs and their graffiti were a mysterious presence that few understood -- if they were aware of them at all. In the thirty plus years since the popular media and entertainment industry have repeatedly spotlighted the subject to the point that the gangsta culture has become a pervasive part of our society. The original gangster graffiti of this period was of a purer form than that seen today, with much emphasis on artistic flourishes. These pieces could last for years in the days before municipilaties instituted aggresive graffiti removal programs that quickly remove them from view -- often overnight. This is, of course, still vandelism but from an earlier and more innocent time."

"The project “Map” questions the red markers of the location based search engine Google Maps.

(...) While zooming in the map the pixel size of the markers on the screen always stay at the same size. But if their size is seen in relation to their environment they shrink while the user does zoom in the map. "On May 11, 2004, Steve Kurtz's wife of 20 years, Hope, died of heart failure in their home in Buffalo. Kurtz called 911. Buffalo Police who responded along with emergency workers, apparently sensitized to 'War on Terror' rhetoric, became alarmed by the presence of art materials in their home which had been displayed in museums and galleries throughout Europe and North America. Convinced that these materials - which consisted of several petri dishes containing harmless forms of bacteria, and scientific equipment for testing genetically altered food - were the work of a terrorist, the police called the FBI.

The next day, as Kurtz was on his way to the funeral home, he was illegally detained by agents from the FBI and Joint Terrorism Task Force, who informed him he was being investigated for "bioterrorism." At no point during the 22 hours Kurtz was held and questioned did the agents Mirandize him or inform him he could leave. Meanwhile, agents from numerous federal law enforcement agencies - including five regional branches of the FBI, the Joint Terrorism Task Force, Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, and the Buffalo Police, Fire Department, and state Marshall's office - descended on Kurtz's home in Hazmat suits. Cordoning off half a block around his home, they seized his cat, car, computers, manuscripts, books, equipment, and even his wife's body from the county coroner for further analysis. The Erie County Health Department condemned his house as a possible "health risk." "

"short-art-volume ist eine Galerie für Ausstellungen von kurzer Dauer. An zwei aufeinander folgenden Wochenenden im Monat bietet short-art-volume Künstlern eine Plattform, ihre Arbeiten zu präsentieren. Die Macher von short-art-volume organisieren und moderieren an einem Abend einen exklusiven Event und stellen Kontakte her. An den folgenden Tagen können Interessenten die Werke in der Galerie direkt vom Künstler erwerben.

Die Galerie steht auf historischem Grund. Von 1951 bis 1995 hieß die Dorotheenstraße Clara-Zetkin-Straße, benannt nach der Alterspräsidentin des deutschen Reichstages. Die Galerie mit der Hausnummer 90 war zu DDR-Zeiten in Künstlerkreisen als Café Clara 90 bekannt. Im selben Haus befindet sich auch das Archiv Verein der Berliner Künstlerinnen 1867 e.V., das größte Archiv der Kunst von Frauen in Europa.

Am Freitag, 13. Oktober 2006, öffnet short-art-volume in der Dorotheenstraße 90 mit Werken des Berliner Künstlers Hardy Kuttner – juriert für den Brandenburgischen Kunstpreis der Märkischen Oderzeitung 2006 – erstmals die Pforten (Werkschau Kuttner auf www.leitbilder.net). Zur Vernissage um 20.00 Uhr laden wir Sie und alle Kunstfreunde herzlich ein."

It's a small aquarium size space in the "happening" Kreuzberg area and Connie has set out a tight schedule of shows for the six months we'll be there. This starts with an exhibition of Jamie Reid's printed work and finishes with a version of Made in Chatham by Billy Childish."

April eröffnet The Aquarium Berlin mit der Ausstellung „A Cheap Holiday in Other People’s Misery“ von Jamie Reid, dem Mann der der Königin 1977 eine Sicherheitsnadel durch die Nase gezogen und den Sex Pistols zu super-duper Plattencovern verholfen hat. Wer anständig fragt, bekommt letztere vielleicht vom Künstler signiert. Zu sehen (und kaufen) gibt es Arbeiten, Drucke und Collagen von vor dreißig Jahren bis in die Gegenwart, Tapete, Bettwäsche, sexy Hemdchen, Schmuck und zum ersten Mal weltweit die preisgünstige Jamie Reid Pop-Edition. Die Ostereier sind noch in Arbeit.
