After seeing Robin Williams at a small comedy-club in Minneapolis a long time ago, I was a bit of a fan. I even liked his first movie-appearance as Robert Altmans "Popeye" in that hideous musical..... But then again, Robin Williams stopped taking drugs at some point and got involved with Disney.The guy ended up shooting crap like "Hook", "Fumanji", "Flubber", Mrs.Doubtfire" or"Patch Adams". Can you believe that shit?

Now Williams made a comeback as a psychopath with "Insomnia" and One Hour Photo. "Insomnia" has all the ingredients of a solid thriller and a really nice twist to set things up. A cop from L.A. (Al Pacino) accidently shoots his partner while running after a killer (Robin Williams) through some fog. The killer sees the shooting and starts blackmailing the cop. Good movie, great actors, but the plot is too structured. While the first half leaves a lot of space for imagination, the second part is nothing but one big chase. "Insomnia" is another one of those hero vs.villain-movies about a represantitive of the forces of good fighting his counterpart while having to overcome the obstacle of not getting any sleep.

Mark Romaneks "One Hour Photo" is nothing like that all. No good cop, no "kind-of-corrupt-but-still-good-at-heart"-cop fighting with the suits upstairs about unconventional methods of interrogation or any other generic elements imported from cop-movies. Clever plot-points too. It follows a conventional structure, but then again it's not conventional at all. Robin Williams is one awesome creep, not just another serial-killer. Actually nobody dies, which makes the stalker even more horrifying. Here's a movie about a man with no life. He's living in a shopping-mall and he is obsessed with the family of a customer. In his dreamworld he is the good uncle of the family, but in reality he's an aging loser with no social ties. It's like Jimmy Corrigan with lots of codeine, it's "Psycho" with a camera instead of a shower. Some far out pictures shot inside a chilly mall and Robin Williams with his best performance so far. I knew he could do better than wearing women's clothes! "One Hour Photo" is one of the most underrated movies out there right now. Go and see it. Here is the One Hour Photo-Trailer in various formats
