Interesting little story in the "Berliner Zeitung" about the artist Thomas Nast who moved from Germany to the US in 1850. Nast originally created the image of Santa Claus the way we know him for the "Harper's Weekly"-magazine in 1862. President Abraham Lincoln himself ordered to create a positive charakter for christmas to cheer up his troops in the Civil War for the winter. Nast has also created the classic image of Uncle Sam (that "I want you"-poster!), the elephant for the conservative party and the donkey for the democrats. Interessante Story in der "Berliner Zeitung" von heute

Der Weihnachtsmann wurde 1862 auf Anordnung von Abe Lincoln für das "Harper's Weekly"-Magazin entwickelt um die Truppen der Nordstaaten im Bürgerkrieg bei laune zu halten. Gezeichnet hat die Figur der deutschstämmige Künstler Thomas Nast, der auch Unkle Sam und die Wappentiere Elefant und Esel für die beiden großen Parteien in den USA entwickelt hat. Das Archiv in Landau zeigt bis zum 30.Januar eine Ausstellung über Thomas Nast (Info unter 06341-13157)
