"Since the advent of multiculturalism in the 1970s, the redefinition of race in cultural terms has gone hand in hand with an official discourse of respect for cultural difference and diversity. Today, in the wake of 9/11, the rhetoric of tolerance is visibly breaking down. As state policy shifts from the celebration of difference to an anxious call for assimilation, the racial other (whether citizen or immigrant) is under renewed pressure to integrate herself into society.

In this issue of Mute, contributors read the crisis of multiculturalism – political, scientific and social – as both a neoliberal offensive and a challenge to rethink the relationship between particular identities and universal rights, evolutionary science and biopower.

Please read this story at Alternet: The new documentary, Jesus Camp, which chronicles a North Dakota summer camp where kids as young as 6 are taught to become dedicated Christian soldiers in "God's army," is an illustration of this sentiment in the extreme.

The film, by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, the duo who also directed the critically-acclaimed The Boys of Baraka, opened to an appreciative and flabbergasted audience at the 2006 TriBeca Film Festival, where it received the Special Jury Award. The directors skillfully captured the daily interactions of a world that would be foreign to most viewers: children speaking in tongues and talking of being "born again" at age 5.

The star of the film is Pastor Becky Fischer, who explains the startling mission of her "Kids on Fire" camp: "I want young people to be as committed to laying down their lives for the Gospel as they are in Pakistan." At the camp, the children are asked: "How many of you want to be those who will give up your life for Jesus?" Little hands shoot up from every direction. They are told: "We have to break the power of the enemy over the government." At one point, Becky yells: "This means war! Are you a part of it or not?" More little hands.

Indymedia (11.06.2006 03:44): "Nazi-Überfall in Friedrichshain- Ecke Warschauer/Revalerstraße, direkt beim Raw-Tempel. Nazis sind in Kleingruppen unterwegs und haben Menschen angegriffen. Ich fuhr dort eben zufällig vorbei und bin nur kurz stehengeblieben, da ca 10 Polizeiwagen die Revaler blockierten. Direkt an der Warschauer wurden zwei 'Hools' von der Polizei festgehalten und um mich herum war nur Thor Steinar und Hoolywood zu sehen. Anscheinend wurde jemand verletzt, der Krankenwagen kam kurz darauf und die komischen Gestalten verdrücken sich momentan in Kleingruppen Richtung Frankfurter Allee und Ostkreuz. Da die Polizei eintraf, als ich kam, kann ich nicht genau sagen wieviele dort zu Gange waren, aber es waren mindestens 15 'Kameraden' an der Warschauer, z.T. sehr unauffällig gekleídet.
