A japanese movie with polish actors called Avalon will take audiences in a storm when it comes out. Shot by Mamoru Oshii who did Ghost in the Shell in a wild duplex-coloured mix of real footage and animation this is a must-see if there are must-sees.

The Producers

I saw Mel Brooks' first movie "Producers" i s probably one of the best movies making fun of nazis I have seen in a long time. Some producer comes up with the ultimate sheme to put up a musical nobody wants to see and cash off from it. He buys a script for a Hitler-musical and lets some gay pothead called LSD play Adolf. But then Springtime for Hitler becomes a great hit! Deutschland is happy and gay. Hilarious movie if you can catch it on late-night tv or something like that!

It's also a huge hit on broadway by now.

Berlin - Mudd Club

The legendary Mudd Club from New York City has reopened in Berlin at Große Hamburger Straße 17 around Hackescher Markt.

Nice sub-basement-place with the usual promoters putting up shows. Great mix of things that have been happening for quite awhile already, nothing actually new, rather a place for thirty-something-punks finally getting into some Coltrane and Gene Vincent.

Rock'n'Roll in all it's comic-incarnations from the dirty 60s, Russian Polka and a lot of weird and interesting shit going on.
Lots of stories about the old owner who seems to be kind of confused and doesn't really know what to make of the Berlin scene around that area.

Sept.11th - THE SECRET WARS

"What we are seeing here is free market capitalism at it's finest" (Richard "Dick" Grasso on the day Wall Street reopened after the attack on the WTC)

"...It was the Americans, after all, who poured resources into the 1980s war against the Soviet-backed regime in Kabul, at a time when girls could go to school and women to work. Bin Laden and his mojahedin were armed and trained by the CIA and MI6, as Afghanistan was turned into a wasteland and its communist leader Najibullah left hanging from a Kabul lamp post with his genitals stuffed in his mouth.
But by then Bin Laden had turned against his American sponsors, while US-sponsored Pakistani intelligence had spawned the grotesque Taliban now protecting him. To punish its wayward Afghan offspring, the US subsequently forced through a sanctions regime which has helped push 4m to the brink of starvation, according to the latest UN figures, while Afghan refugees fan out across the world. All this must doubtless seem remote to Americans desperately searching the debris of what is expected to be the largest-ever massacre on US soil - as must the killings of yet more Palestinians in the West Bank yesterday, or even the 2m estimated to have died in Congo's wars since the overthrow of the US-backed Mobutu regime. "What could some political thing have to do with blowing up office buildings during working hours?" one bewildered New Yorker asked yesterday...." --Guardian, 9/15/01

W.Bush has taken over america by having his brother at the right place to make him president. Then we got the all-new "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropiate Tools required to intercept and obstruct terrorism Act" or shortly, the USA-Patriot-Law.
Now, everybody standing up against any form of oppression in the states can be thrown into jail for acts of terrorism and all that shit.

"There are reminders to all Americans that they need to watch what they say, watch what they do, and that this is not a time for remarks like that. … It never is" - White House spokesperson Ari Fleischer

We are at War! Or let's say that's what the trigger happy crowd wants us to believe!

Actually W.Bush has corrected himself already. It's not a war, it's a crusade and no sacrifice is big enough to show those mercyless, faceless killers who they are dealing with.
Just ask the "farmers and ranchers" George W.Bush referred to when he addressed the public for the first time after september the 11th. "Dead or alive" W. said, just like in the wild west, he added, preparing to legitimize any sort of state terrorism that a bunch of honest democrats got rid of back in the 60s.

While everybody keeps mourning, the secret service announced an "intelligence war" and Mr.Rumsfeld asked for: a.) a new unconventional technich of war.( Bollocks! What would that be? More killer squadrons as in all the other dirty little wars the US fought after WWII?)

b.) a fourth secret service working along side with the NSA which officially didn't even exist until things got too obvious. Now we are getting another service in charge of "terrorism", controlling the CIA and the F.B.I. Oh, come on!

c.) being allowed to hire any sort of dirty scumbag for undecover-operations nobody is supposed to know about. That's what they always did, right?

But there we go. It's not a war, it's just a process that has been going on for quite a while.

History has gotten cheap and prepackaged. Good and evil, that's what's left of the world we used to live in. The world under texas state law. Smoke out the left! Violence disguised as justice.

Americans couldn't care less in their isolationsim and that's where it gets dangerous. They look up to their president and trust him, singing their anthem, waving flags for the camera and praying to god. What else are they gonna do? They don't even know where Afghanistan is, hell, most of them don't know where they are themselves if you show them a map of the world! Any unemployed guy in Bangladesh is smarter than you regular joe-next-door in the US.
W wants to make us believe, the only thing americans understand is american football and killing small animals with big guns.

But obviously most people in America are not as stupid as their representative wants us to believe. They simply don't understand why the mayority of the world thinks they are complete idiots who should stick to football and horseback-riding. Most americans have never been in another country where not everybody speaks English and they don't learn languages by themselves because they don't feel a need to communicate with the rest of the world. You know why? Because they are proud to live in a country that is sort of a perfect dictator-rulership.
The guy who was more or less responsible for preparing the world for global warfare is one big hero now, eh? He stole the election, he was hiding when things were happening and he still doesn't know how to deal with it. Some kind of hero.... America fights the popularity-war again! Whew, send in the cheerleaders and the end of the world will be just one giant superbowl. Buy warbonds and you can help fight terrorism too!

Berlin: Top 5 Comicstores in town

->Grober Unfug, Zossener Str.32-33, Subway-Station: Mehringdamm
Probably the best store in Berlin. Large selection of comics, books, merchandising etc. from all over the world. A whole lot of small-press-stuff and weird shit. Located in the south-end of Kreuzberg. Loads of coffee-places, record stores and boutiques around the corner on Bergmannstraße.
There is a german-language-store on the street-level and an international store upstairs. The place also hosts a little art-gallery. Check the website for their current show.
Grober Unfug
There is another smaller store under the same name at subway-station Weinmeisterstr./exit Schönhauser. They don't have the whole selection, but they will help you with your basic-needs too.

->Modern Graphics, Oranienstr.22, Subway-Station: Kottbusser Tor
The other big store. Large selection of US-stuff and German Independents. They also have interesting signings every once in a while. Located in the heart of Kreuzberg. Lots of bars and book-stores on the same street.
or Bundesallee 83, Subway-Station: Friedrich-Wilhelm-Paltz
The other store they have is a little further out in the west.
Modern Graphics

->That place in the backyard of the cinema Central called staalplaat(?) or somethign like that
It's in the back of the house which hosts the Cafe Central on Rosenthaler Str., Subway-Station : Hackescher Markt. If you follow the movie-posters into the last courtyard, go straight ahead, open the big metal-door and the store will be on the first floor.
They have all the avantgarde-comics and -design as you might have expected it from the description. Totally worth a visit and one of the most interesting backyards to visit in this crowded tourist-area.

->Peter Skodzik
Large store specializing in German comics and Action Figures. He has them all. A toy-collectors' wet dream!
Subway-Station: Nollendorfplatz. The store is on Nollendorfplatz 5 next to the theatre. Good Hot Dog-Stand with a good selection of vino on the corner and Winterfeldplatz just a block away. You'll find the reggae-bar Slumberland and a few other restaurants around here. Lots of gay-bars.

->Black Dog Comics
Specializing in US-comics. Big selection of Underground, including nasty xxx-titles.

Abbas Kiarostami banned in the US

Director Abbas Kiarostami from Iran didn't get a visa for the US to present his movie "ten" at the New York filmfestival. The US-embassy in Paris refused to let the filmmaker into the country.
Kiarostami got the golden palm in Cannes in 1997, the special-price of the jury in Venice in 1999 and a Fellinin-medal by the Unesco. He also received a special honor-decoration at the San Francisco Festival in 2000.
"Ten" was also shown in Cannes this year. The movie consists of ten episodes inside a car. The movie will still be shown in New York.
Richard Pena, director of the festival stated in Daily Variety that there were also problems with getting two chinese filmmakers into the country.

PEOPLE:

Brian Michael Bendis - Most wanted comic-writer

Bendis is an amazing writer and artist who ended up being a "just a writer" . His first bulk of work consists of dark crime-stories which have been collected in large paperbacks with lots of extra-material. These books are like dvds!
"Torso", "Jinx", "Fire" and "Goldfish" were recognized by the comic-media for it's brilliant dialogues. It was obvious that this guy had his shit together.
Following up was "Fortune and Glory", a mini-series about a writer trying to sell a script in Hollywood. But the big thing is "Powers", an ongoing series put out by Image Comics.

Bendis describes the series as "pretty high concept" at it is.
"It's about Walker and Pilgrim, two homicide detectives who work specifically cases that deal with super-powered homicides and by doing so, they end up unpeeling and looking under ther rocks of the various superheroes and the world they live in, and it's kind of a VH1 'Behind the Music' perspective on superheroes where we have one-hit wonders, legends, icons, scandals and all the facets of modern celebrities, mixed with the super-heroics we all grew up with."

Powers

The concept is brilliant and Frank Oz will do the movie-version.

"Powers" is collected in Paperbacks as well and it'S one of the most original series in years.
It also got Bendis a job at Marvel where he writes Ultimate Spider-Man, Daredevil and Alias.
Daredevil has always been the only interesting Marvel-title since it always had interesting new writers and artists. Bendis is doing a great job here and Alias is the best title in the new line of adult-orientated Max-comics. It's the story of a female ex-superhero who has turned privat-detective. It's another great read. Spider-Man, I don't care, but that's where the money is made and Bendis has also signed up as the writer for the new tv-cartoon starring old webhead.

Brian Michael Bendis set new standards. It's not only the brilliant dialogues he writes and the nice twists he comes up with, it's also that large amount of work he gets done every month while still operating a funny message-board under the banner of his website jinxworld.com. This guy puts out some of the most interesting shit in the entertainment-industry right now and he's still getting better and better with his indie-title "Powers".

visit Jiinxworld
